Opportunity for Photonics in U.S. Manufacturing Initiative

On 2 June 2014, the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) announced a Request for Information (RFI) for two Institutes for Manufacturing Innovation (IMI) in the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI) and has included photonics as one of six possible technologies. Based on the responses to the RFI, DOD will then narrow down these technologies. In order for photonics to be chosen, a strong response from the photonics community is needed.

For more information on how you can help make this a reality, please visit the NPI website or contact the OSA Public Policy Team.

OIDA Hosts Meeting on Market Gaps in Photonic Integration

OIDA On 19 May 2014, OIDA hosted over 70 people at OSA headquarters for a one-of-a-kind event bringing key industry stakeholders and U.S. government funding agencies together. The aim was to explore mutual interest in U.S. manufacturing of wafer-based integrated optics, moving the conversation forward from previous discussions hosted by OIDA last year. Among the opportunities at stake is the NNMI program worth up to US$140 million in shared funding over five years.

The meeting reviewed the case for integrated photonics as a key technology, examined why there is a gap in commercialization of the technology in the U.S., and where in the ecosystem those gaps are. Speakers from industry presented their views on the existing opportunities and what gaps could be addressed with co-funding.

OIDA will issue a report on the meeting. For more information, contact Tom Hausken.

OSA Member News: Eric Mazur

The Minerva Academy has named Eric Mazur as the first winner of the Minerva Prize for Advancements in Higher Education. Mazur is being recognized for his significant contributions to improving higher education, specifically for his development of Peer Instruction, an innovative teaching method that incorporates interactive pedagogy into the classroom and has been recognized worldwide for driving dramatic improvements in student learning. He will receive a US$500,000 cash prize as part of the award.

OSA Member News: Sir John Pendry and Stefan Hell

The Kavli Prize in Nanoscience was awarded to Sir John Pendry and Stefan W. Hell “for transformative contributions to the field of nano-optics that have broken long-held beliefs about the limitations of the resolution limits of optical microscopy and imaging.” With their respective work, they have challenged established beliefs, showing that light can interact with nanostructures smaller than its wavelength. The prize is awarded by The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and consists of a cash award of US$1,000,000 in each field.

Participate in District Visits Week

International Year of LightThe National Photonics Initiative (NPI) is organizing a District Visits Week from 11-15 August 2014. It is a great opportunity to invite your U.S. Congressional representatives to visit your facility. NPI will provide you with the information you need to have a successful district visit.

District visits allow legislators to meet constituents, see the economic impact you are having on their district, and establish you as a resource. Understanding what is happening in their district gives legislators a valuable perspective when the time comes for them to vote on legislation.

If you are unable to participate during the week of 11-15 August, you can host a district visit during a different time. Please reach out to us, we will help you through the process. If you are interested in doing a district visit or want more information, please visit the NPI District Visits Week webpage.

Guide star
A powerful laser at the Allgäu Public Observatory in Ottobeuren, Germany, creates an artificial “guide star” (used in correcting for atmospheric blurring in telescope observations) by causing sodium atoms in the atmosphere, 90 km above, to glow. - ESO/T. Kasper (AVSO)
