About the Speaker

Andrei Faraon is an Assistant Professor of Applied Physics at Caltech. He received a Ph.D. in Applied Physics and a M.S. in Electrical Engineering, both from Stanford in 2009, and a B.S. in Physics with honors from Caltech in 2004. From 2009-2012 he was a postdoc at Hewlett Packard Laboratories. He has published over 60 articles and filed more than 20 patents. He received young investigator awards from NSF (CAREER), AFOSR and ONR. Faraon’s research is in the fields of nano-photonics and quantum optics. Thoughout his career, he studied the interaction between light confined in photonic nano-resonators and optical quantum emitters in solids. The studied emitters include quantum dots in III-V semiconductors, color centers in diamond, and rare-earth dopants in crystals. He has demonstrated applications in nonlinear optical devices operating at single photon level, single photon sources and optical quantum memories.
