Flat Optics and Their Application in Spectroscopy: Spectrometry Using 2D and 3D Dielectric Meta-Optics

Hosted By: Applied Spectroscopy Technical Group

04 January 2024 12:00 - 13:00

Eastern Time (US & Canada) (UTC -05:00)

You're invited to join the Applied Spectroscopy Technical Group for a three-part virtual seminar series on flat optics and their applications in spectroscopy. This first session will feature a talk from Prof. Andrei Faraon from Caltech.

Dielectric meta-optics enable control of the phase, polarization and amplitude of optical wavefronts with high spatial resolution that can be difficult to achieve via other means. This opens the possibility of developing new devices for spectral imaging that provide various advantages in terms of size and multi-functionality compared to conventional optical systems. Andrei Faraon will discuss implementations that his group has demonstrated including multi-spectral imaging using folded metasurface optics and spectral splitting on image sensors using volumetric meta-optics.

Andrei Faraon is an Assistant Professor of Applied Physics at Caltech. He received a Ph.D. in Applied Physics and a M.S. in Electrical Engineering, both from Stanford in 2009, and a B.S. in Physics with honors from Caltech in 2004. From 2009-2012 he was a postdoc at Hewlett Packard Laboratories. He has published over 60 articles and filed more than 20 patents. He received young investigator awards from NSF (CAREER), AFOSR and ONR. Faraon’s research is in the fields of nano-photonics and quantum optics. Thoughout his career, he studied the interaction between light confined in photonic nano-resonators and optical quantum emitters in solids. The studied emitters include quantum dots in III-V semiconductors, color centers in diamond, and rare-earth dopants in crystals. He has demonstrated applications in nonlinear optical devices operating at single photon level, single photon sources and optical quantum memories.
