Prof. Dr. Liren Liu, OSA Fellow and distinguished Professor at the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, passed away on 20 June 2017. Prof. Dr. Liu was a renowned scientist in the areas of optics and optical engineering and a significant contributor to the community. Prof. Liu was made an OSA Fellow in 1998 for his contributions in optical signal processing, computing, and the promotion of international optical activities.

Prof. Liu’s professional career spanned more than 50 years of service at the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics within the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). His research interests included crystal optics, holographic optics, optical computing, optical storage, volume grating, space laser communication and synthetic aperture radar.  Prof. Dr. Liu was a prolific author and published extensively with more than 700 journal papers to his credit. In January of 2012, Prof. Liu was recognized as one of the 50 Most Published Authors of Applied Optics, with fifty-two articles published between 1982-2011.  Applied Optics is a highly regarded journal in the optics field that features articles focused on applications-centered research in optics, photonics, imaging, and sensing.

In addition to his research, Prof. Liu was a tireless advocate for young scientists having served as a mentor and advisor to more than 100 scientific graduates, including 70 doctoral students.   He was also very active in international academic conferences.

Prof. Dr. Liu will be dearly missed by his colleagues, students, and many collaborators within the scientific community.
