Anna Consortini Recognized with The Optical Society 2018 Robert E. Hopkins Leadership Award

WASHINGTON—The Optical Society (OSA) is pleased to name Anna Consortini, Università degli Studi di Firenze, Italy the 2018 Robert E. Hopkins Leadership Award recipient. Dr. Consortini is recognized for her outstanding dedication to promoting optics at an international level with very valuable leadership in institutions and scientific societies like International Commission for Optics (ICO), International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), The Optical Society (OSA) and Italian Society of Optics and Photonics (SIOF).

The Robert E. Hopkins Leadership Award recognizes an individual or group who has had a significant impact on the global optics and photonics community or on society as a whole stemming from non-research oriented activities. The award was established in 1997 with the support of Milton Chang and New Focus to strengthen the link between the optics community and the public. In 2012, the award was named in honor of Robert E. Hopkins, University of Rochester, NY, USA.

“Collaboration efforts across professional societies and research areas has driven much of Anna’s efforts throughout her career;” stated Ian Walmsley, 2018 President of The Optical Society and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, Hooke Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Oxford, UK. “She has served on the editorial committees for peer-reviewed journals and directed the ‘Winter College on Optics,’ jointly organized by the ICTP and ICO. Her impact on OSA and the industry is honored today with this award.”

Dr.  Consortini holds a degree in Physics and a PhD, "Libera Docenza" in Electromagnetic Waves from the University of Florence, Italy. She was a researcher with the National Research Council (CNR) of Italy from 1962 to 1983 and joined the University of Florence faculty in 1968. She is a retired professor of physics but is still active in teaching optics and optometry. Consortini is Fellow member of OSA, IOP, EOS and SPIE; Emeritus member of SIOF; and member of EPS and the Società Italiana di Fisica, Italian Physical Society.
