Logos and Use Guidelines

Optica Name
Optica (formerly OSA), Advancing Optics and Photonics Worldwide, is the society dedicated to promoting the generation, application, archiving and dissemination of knowledge in the field. Founded in 1916, it is the leading organization for scientists, engineers, business professionals, students and others interested in the science of light. Optica’s renowned publications, meetings, online resources and in-person activities fuel discoveries, shape real-life applications and accelerate scientific, technical and educational achievement.

  • In first use when writing about Optica, always use the name with the tagline: “Optica, Advancing Optics and Photonics Worldwide.” Subsequent mentions may just use the name “Optica.”
  • The society’s legal name is The  Optical Society of America, Inc. The society’s registered trade name (also referred to as our DBA) is Optica. This is the name we now do business under.
     
  • The Optica logos are owned by Optica and are registered trademarks of Optica. Optica carefully monitors the usage of its logos to ensure compliance with its Terms and Conditions of Logo Use and when necessary, takes appropriate action to protect its logos.

Terms and Conditions of Logo Use
By downloading the Optica logos, you (“you/your” may refer to an individual  or organization) agree to the following terms and conditions. 

Optica hereby grants you a limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-assignable, royalty-free license to use the Optica logos on your website, social media platforms and Authorized Materials (as defined herein) for the sole purpose of identifying your legitimate affiliation with Optica and to promote the programs, publications, products, services and events of Optica.  Authorized Materials are materials produced by or for you that: 1) do not infringe upon the personal or intellectual property rights of any third party; 2) contain only true and accurate information; 3) are in alignment with Optica’s mission to promote the generation, application and archiving of knowledge in optics and photonics and to disseminate this knowledge worldwide; and 4) are in alignment with Optica’s core values: innovation, inclusivity, integrity and impact. Your usage of Optica’s logos shall conform to Optica’s guidelines, policies and procedures, which may be updated from time to time in Optica’s sole discretion, and you agree to remain informed about and comply with all such updates.  

Modification, alteration or distortion of Optica’s logos is strictly prohibited. In addition, Optica’s logos shall not be used by you in a way that: 1) is inconsistent with Optica’s mission, core values or status as a not-for-profit corporation; 2) competes or conflicts with Optica’s programs, publications, products, services or events; 3) implies endorsement by Optica; 4) is misleading or causes confusion regarding your affiliation with Optica; or 5) diminishes the commercial value of the logos or the reputation and goodwill of Optica.

Optica reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to amend this license or revoke it in part or whole, at any time with or without cause. This license shall terminate immediately upon the conclusion of your affiliation with Optica or upon revocation by Optica, at which time you shall forthwith remove Optica’s logos from your website and social media platform and cease further publication, use and distribution of Authorized Materials containing the Optica logos.

Optica disclaims any and all express or implied warranties with respect to its logos, including fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability and infringement and shall not be liable to you for any claims, liabilities or damages of any kind related to your use of Optica’s logos.  You agree to indemnify, hold harmless and defend Optica against all claims, actions or liabilities caused by your breach of these terms and conditions. By downloading the Optica logos you agree that this license shall be governed by the laws of the State of New York without reference to its choice of law doctrine and that jurisdiction and venue for any claims related hereto shall be in the District of Columbia.
