First OSA Local Section Founded in China
WASHINGTON, Jan. 30, 2014—The Optical Society (OSA) is pleased to announce the formation of the first OSA Local Section in China. The Shenzhen OSA Local Section was recently approved by the OSA Member and Education Services Council and will serve the Shenzhen area in the Guangdong Province of China. Professor Xiao Wei Sun of the South University of Science and Technology of China will serve as president of this section, which is a self-governing organization with its own officers and bylaws.“Shenzhen is one of the four international metropolitan areas in China and has the most vibrant private enterprises in the country," said Sun. "With its strong economic development, Shenzhen is also emerging as an integral part of the global optics and photonics community with the largest solid state lighting, flat panel display and optical communications industries in China. The OSA Local Section in Shenzhen will not only bring together local professionals, but also help raise awareness of the importance of optics and photonics to emerging scientists, further solidifying Shenzhen’s role as a leader in the field.”
OSA Local Sections engage in a variety of activities, including providing networking events from local professionals, to teaching young students about optics through activities such as science fairs, lab tours and classroom demonstrations as well as participating in philanthropic deeds. OSA’s national organization supports sections through activity grants, awards, publications, guest lecturer programs, networking opportunities and leadership training. OSA has 22 Local Sections, including nine outside of the United States. Information on establishing a section is available on OSA’s website.
