Light-Harvesting, sensors, interferometers - all can benefit from resonant field enhancement in optical cavities. The effect, however, is normally limited to narrow linewidths and there is significant interest in increasing the resonant condition over extended frequency bands, i.e. achieving white-light cavities.

In this webinar hosted by the NonImaging Optical Design Technical Group, you will learn the basics and nuances of omni-resonance from Prof. Ayman Abouraddy (CREOL, University of Central Florida). He will introduce how his group implements omni-resonance by controlling the angular dispersion of light incident on cavities and applies it to, e.g., achieve coherent perfect absorption in solar cells. You will also learn how the concept can be generalized and specific spatiotemporal light structuring can be exploited to create omni-resonant space-time wave packets.

Subject Matter Level: Introductory - Assumes little previous knowledge of the topic

What You Will Learn:

  • What is omni-resonance, how can it be achieved and what are the intricacies?
  • How can the concept be extended to structured optical wave packets?
  • What are current and future applications of omni-resonance?

Who Should Attend:

  • Students and researchers of light harvesting/energy optics, structured light, and broad-band cavities
  • Anybody working with broad-band light/optics

About the Presenter: Ayman Abouraddy, CREOL, The College of Optics and Photonics, University of Central Florida

Prof. Ayman Abouraddy received his B.S. and M.S. from Alexandria University before receiving his PhD from Boston University in 2003. After working at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology between 2003 and 2008 as Postdoctoral Fellow and Research Scientist in Materials Science & Engineering and Physics, he was appointed Assistant Professor (2008), Associate Professor (2014) and Full Professor (2017) at CREOL, The College of Optics & Photonics at the University of Central Florida. Abouraddy received a multitude of awards including the Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Award (2009), the College Excellence in Research Award (2013), the Reach for the Stars Award (2014), the College of Optics & Photonics Teaching Incentive Program (TIP) Award (2014), the Research Incentive Award (University) (2015), and recently a DoD Newton Award (2020). He authored more than 120 journal publications and 7 patents, gave 240 conference presentations, and 75 invited talks.
