In Memoriam: Jürgen Kuhl, 1940-2019

Jürgen Kuhl, OSA Fellow and noted physicist, has passed away at the age of 79. Kuhl was active in OSA having served as an Editor of JOSA B from 2001-2005 and as a member of the Fundamental Science Program Committee for CLEO from 1999-2000. He was on faculty at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, Germany. Kuhl was made an OSA Fellow in 2003 for significant and sustained contributions to ultrafast optical studies of semiconductors and development of lasers and techniques for spectroscopy.
Dr. Kuhl was recently honored by a former colleague, Jeffrey White, who served as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow and guest researcher at Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, Germany from 1992-1994. Regarding Dr. Kuhl, Dr. White said, “Herr Dr. Kuhl gave a memorable introduction (Einführung) to scientific thoroughness (Gründlichkeit) and rigor (Strenge) to a generation of grad students from Germany, postdocs from all over the world, and to visiting Humboldt Fellows like myself. The productivity of his group in solid state physics research (Festkörperforschung) was remarkable. When we were working on THz spectroscopy, I remember well achieving a signal to noise ration of 100:1 and Dr. Kuhl asking "Why can't we get 1000:1?)”
Kuhl will be dearly missed by colleagues, former students, and his family including Kristin Kuhl, Silke and Tobias Schramm, Kerstin Kuhl and Yves Pelster, and Fabian, Annika, Annina, Niklas, Ronja and Antonia. OSA and the scientific community mourns the loss of Jürgen Kuhl.
