OSA Student Members Gather in Ottawa for IONS-NA 5 Conference on Optics
WASHINGTON, May. 21, 2013–The International OSA Network of Students (IONSTM) will host the IONS-NA 5 conference—the first in Canada—at the University of Ottawa May 31 – June 2. The conference, organized by the Ottawa-Carleton OSA Student Chapter, will feature technical sessions and programming for graduate students in the field of optics and photonics. The Optical Society (OSA) sponsors the event.
The IONS-NA conference, themed “Communication and Leadership in Science,” will focus on communication, networking, and recent advancements in the field of optics. The scientific program brings notable speakers including John Polanyi, winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his research in chemical kinetics, and Raymond Laflamme, executive director and Canada research chair at the University of Waterloo Institute for Quantum Computing, who will both deliver plenary remarks.
Other invited speakers include:
- Paul Dufour, principal, Paulicy Works, Canada
- Jean-luc Doumont, founding partner, Principiae, Belgium
- Theodore "Ted" Hsu, member, Canadian Parliament for Kingston and the Islands, Canada
- Margaret McCuaig-Johnston, executive vice president, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Canada
Since its inception in 2006 at OSA’s Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO), 29 IONS conferences have been held all over the world, including Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America. The meetings are independently managed by OSA Student Chapters and are designed to give young scientists a way to connect and collaborate with the global optics and photonics community. OSA supports IONS events through guest lecturer funding, travel grants, administrative and marketing support and event funding. More information is available on the IONS website.
