Solutions-Focused Optics Careers
Navigating a career in industry may seem less straightforward than one in academia, but due to the enabling power of optics and photonics, countless industry career paths exist for optical scientists. For example, in the April issue of OPN, two optics professionals who found their footing in industry as applications engineers describe their career journeys. And in OPN’s May issue, a senior applications engineer at Osram Opto Semiconductors describes how industry lighting solutions could pave the way for a consumer-driven augmented-reality revolution.

Interested in military research laboratories or sponsor-funded research as a possible career path? In this Senior Member Insights Q&A, Abbie Watnik, the head of the Optical Techniques Section at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, reflects on her career choices and shares professional advice.
