The OSA Foundation (OSAF) and Coherent, Inc., are pleased to announce David Carlson, a postdoctoral researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, U.S.A., as the inaugural Bernard J. Couillaud Prize winner. Carlson received the award at CLEO: Laser Science to Photonic Applications, San Jose, Calif., U.S.A, 5-10 May 2019. Carlson's winning proposal concerns development of the material tantala (Ta2O5) as a platform for nonlinear integrated photonics technology.

Araceli Venegas-Gómez, University of Strathclyde, UK, was selected as the inaugural Milton and Rosalind Chang Pivoting Fellow. The Milton and Rosalind Chang Pivoting Fellowship provides unrestricted fellowships to talented young optical scientists and engineers who believe their expertise can be utilized to improve society beyond the bench. Venegas-Gómez will focus on advancing awareness and understanding of quantum technologies and policy.

I spent a lot time with the students, answering their questions about academia and industry,
as well as engaging in technical discussions. Not only did I have breakfast, lunch and dinner with the students, but also had lab tours from the students, which was really special. The students at Kansas State University have a rare sense of community that really impressed me and the laser facilities at the University were amazing!

Herbert Walther Award - recognizes distinguished contributions in quantum optics and atomic physics as well as leadership in the international scientific community. This award is co-sponsored by OSA and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG). Nominations for the 2020 award should be submitted to DPG.

John Tyndall Award - recognizes an individual who has made outstanding contributions in any area of optical-fiber technology, including optical fibers themselves, the optical components used in fiber systems, as well as transmission systems and networks using fibers. This award is co-sponsored by OSA and IEEE Photonics Society. Nominations for the 2020 award should be submitted to IEEE Photonics Society.
