Thank You for Attending OFC 2018

OFC, the largest global conference and exhibition in optical communications and networking, wrapped up an impressive and stimulating week in San Diego, California, showcasing the latest innovations in the field, with more than 15,500 attendees, 700+ exhibitors from 65 countries and over 850 peer-reviewed technical sessions.

The only global event where attendees witness the innovation behind the technology that powers communications today, OFC has been on a steep growth trajectory over the last three years, increasing in overall exhibition square footage by 44% and experiencing a 21% growth in exhibitors and attendees.

"Optical advancements in 5G, next-gen optical transport, multi-layer optical internetworking, open transport hardware/software and disaggregation led many discussions this week during OFC-in ground-breaking research presented, technical workshops, product launches and in the plenary addresses from industry visionaries," said Martin Birk, Lead Member of Technical Staff, AT&T Labs, USA, and a General Chair of OFC 2018. "OFC is the industry's stage to present, debate, launch and demonstrate the innovations driving applications including AI and connected vehicles that are on the cusp of changing the world in which we live."

OFC includes dynamic business programming, an exposition of more than 700 companies, and high impact peer-reviewed research that, combined, showcase the trends and pulse of the entire optical networking and communications industry. OFC is managed by The Optical Society (OSA) and co-sponsored by OSA, the IEEE Communications Society (IEEE/ComSoc), and the IEEE Photonics Society. OSA Announces the 2018 Election Slate

OSA is pleased to announce the slate of candidates for the 2018 OSA Elections. Candidates are running for positions on the OSA Board of Directors, effective 1 January 2019. The OSA Election for the 2019 Vice President and two Directors at Large will open 20 June 2018 and will continue through 17 August 2018. Election results will be announced during the OSA Annual Business Meeting in Washington, DC, USA on 18 September 2018.

Ballots will be sent to eligible members on 20 June 2018, so ensure you can participate by updating your contact information in your member profile on www.osa.org. As a reminder, Individual, Emeritus and Recent Graduate members are eligible to vote in the election.

Advocate for Optics and Photonics - Participate in Capitol Hill Visits

24-25, April 2018

Advocate for optics and photonics directly to your members of Congress or their staff by joining OSA and its National Photonics Initiative (NPI) partners for Capitol Hill Visits in Washington, DC on April 24-25, 2018. We encourage participants at all career levels and backgrounds from PhD students and young professionals to experienced members of industry and academia.

Members of Congress want to hear from the people living in their district/state. This is a great opportunity to show the value of your research or industry, inform Congressional offices about optics, and start or continue to build a relationship with your Congressional offices.

Capitol Hill Visits will focus on the NPI, R&D funding, and other legislation relevant to optics and photonics. Specific topics for 2018 visits will be sent out to participants closer to the date. NPI staff will arrange all of your Congressional meetings and provide you with documents to leave with the offices. Participants will be placed in teams to do their visits led by a staff member of one of the sponsoring societies or an experienced Capitol Hill visits participant. A mandatory training session will take place the afternoon of April 24 and all Congressional meetings will take place on April 25.

What's Hot in Optics & Photonics-a Regional View

The January issue of the OIDA newsletter offered some perspectives on what are the hot topics in optics and photonics today. There are many such initiatives in our field, too many to list in this newsletter, but they can be sorted into government initiatives versus commercial ones.

Global Optics and Photonics Employs 3.7 million People

OIDA's latest estimate of global optics and photonics employment stands at 3,700,000, based on estimates for each region. This workforce produced components and subsystems worth nearly US$ 430 billion last year, as we noted in the January issue of the OIDA newsletter.

OIDA's estimate includes the employment for manufacturing of both optical components and systems.

OIDA's First Market Update Dinner at Photonics West

OIDA (OSA Industry Development Associates) held their First Market Update Dinner on 30 January at Photonics West. The dinner was a success, with Dr. Tom Hausken delivering an impactful Market Update presentation to 47 industry executives. The purpose of this dinner was to engage current OIDA Members as well as cultivate prospects interested in OIDA membership.
