Introducing the Innovation School: 4 Days to Becoming an Innovator

2018 Kaminow Winner Announced

The Ivan P. Kaminow Outstanding Early Career Professional Prize honors Dr. Kaminow for his many contributions to the field of optics and photonics as well as his dedication to mentoring and inspiring young researchers. Each year, an early career professional receives funding to attend The Optical Society (OSA) Leadership Meeting in Washington, DC in addition to an OSA-managed meeting of their choice.

The 2018 honoree is Dr. Amol Choudhary. Amol is the Australian Research Council's Discovery Early Career Research Award (DECRA) fellow at the School of Physics at the University of Sydney. His area of research is in integrated optics focusing on the development of on-chip mode-locked lasers and nonlinear optical signal processing. His most important contributions are the demonstration of fundamentally mode-locked multi-GHz repetition-rate waveguide lasers that can have potential applications in optical frequency comb metrology (Optics Letters, 37, 4416-4418, 2012 and Optics Express Optics Express, 21, 19608-19614, 2013) and a technique for the on-chip purification of optical frequency combs for telecommunications applications (Optics Letters , 42, 5074-5077, 2017).

Amol has been an active member of OSA for more than seven years. He is currently serving on the CLEO Science and Innovations Nonlinear Optical Technologies sub-committee (S&I 4). Congratulations on receiving this distinguished prize!

Traveling Lecturer Spotlight: Michelle Sander

The day started with an opportunity over breakfast to meet the student chapter leaders and invited speakers. An exciting conference program was awaiting us, featuring Nader Engheta as keynote speaker. The day was packed with very interesting talks introducing extreme optics, nanostructures for focused sonic excitation, novel ultrafast laser sources, biomedical tools for bladder cancer diagnostics, two-photon and Brillouin microscopy. Over lunch and in contributed talks, PhD students and postdocs from JHU and surrounding campuses featured their research in poster presentations. Overall, the conference offered a great opportunity for scientific discussions and networking. It was a very rewarding experience to have been able to contribute and participate. I enjoyed many stimulating scientific exchanges and it was a pleasure to make many new connections. Thank you very much to the OSA student chapter leaders, particularly Milad Alemohammad and Jasper Stroud as well as Michelle Graham, Ebuka Arinze, Kangmei Lin and Jeff Shin, who did an amazing job organizing the conference and taking care of all logistics, making the day a great success.

Honoring Our Mentors

January was National Mentor Month in the United States. OSA's global headquarters is located in the USA and we wanted to take advantage of this celebration to highlight our worldwide community of mentors and mentees. Each day in January, we highlighted a tribute posted to our "Honor Your Mentor" program on osa.org and social media.

The Honor Your Mentor program allows members of the optics and photonics community an opportunity to publicly recognize someone who has served as a mentor. The goal of the program is to honor great mentors and remind us all of the impact mentorship can have on our careers and lives.

OSA is accepting applications for the co-sponsorship of meetings taking place between May and August 2018. The financial support is not intended to fully underwrite a meeting and should be used for student prizes or to directly support student, invited speaker and/or attendee participation.

New 1-Day OIDA Immersion Workshop on Scalable Integrated Photonics for 5G and IoT

11 March 2018 - Held in Conjunction with OFC in San Diego, CA, USA

Attend this workshop and get a deep look at scalable integrated photonics for 5G and IoT. Attendees will learn about new opportunities and network with the top experts in the field. The workshop includes five presentation sessions, one discussion session, breakfast, lunch, poster display, and special evening networking event.

This workshop will present plenary and invited talks by leading experts in the field covering the following topics:

• The 5G and IoT markets as they relate to integrated photonic devices-where are the largest opportunities and where is the low hanging fruit for photonics to have impact? Overview of the high level business and technical metrics that integrated photonics needs to meet for these applications.
