2009 OSA President and OSA International Photonics Advocacy Coalition Chair Tom Baer delivered a plenary talk at the annual meeting of Canada’s Sentinel North program in Quebec City on OSA’s Global Environmental Measurement and Monitoring (GEMM) Initiative. Leveraging regional strengths in optics and photonics, GEMM is establishing research centers focused on regional and local environmental concerns. Sentinel North, an arctic research hub based at Université Laval in Montréal, is a major science and technology program funded through the Canada First Research Excellence Fund. Sentinel North’s focus has many commonalities with those of other regions with which the GEMM Initiative is partnering.

It was a pleasure to visit the University of Exeter and to give the opening talk at IONS Exeter 2019. The IONS conference was very well organised by the students and I commend them for this. The talks were all very high quality and the range of topics was very diverse from the biomechanics of tissue, to how to publish in the current pressure-intense climate. This was my first time to visit this part of England, to finally see the university and visit some of the optics labs there. I was very impressed with the beautiful campus and the state-of-the-art facilities available. Exeter is also a wonderfully historical city, with a magnificent cathedral that I also had time to visit.

The 5G Summit will provide a platform for industry leaders, innovators, academic researchers, and the government community to collaborate, learn, and exchange ideas.
