Novel 2-dimensional materials are being intensively studied for potential applications in electronic devices and new scientific findings in solid state physics. However, inherent key issues related with the scale-up a par with Silicon technologies have not been fully resolved. In contrast to practical electronic applications, nonlinear optic applications of 2-dimensional materials have shown a high feasibility for practical applications, especially when they are integrated to fiber optic devices.

In this webinar hosted by the OSA Fiber Modeling and Fabrication Technical Group, Dr. Kyunghwan Oh of Yonsei University will discuss the current status of nonlinear optic studies of 2-dimensional materials such as graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, and perovskites. Basic physical principles for nonlinear saturable absorption will be discussed and various structures for implementing those 2-dimensional materials in fiber optic platforms will be reviewed. Finally, fiber laser cavities with these novel saturable absorbers will be discussed in terms of pulse duration, spectral width, and average power. The webinar will be a good review for graduate students to pursue combination of fiber optics with new materials.

What You Will Learn:

  • Optical properties of nonlinear 2-dimensional materials
  • Basic principle of short pulse generation in laser physics
  • Saturable absorber structures in fiber optic platforms
  • Fiber laser cavity design for short pulse generation

Who Should Attend:

  • Undergraduate, Masters, and PhD Students
  • Researchers both in academia and industry
