In this webinar hosted by the OSA Optical Communications Technical Group, Professor Massimo Tornatore of Politecnico di Milano will provide an overview to machine learning applications in optical transport networks.

The discussion will begin with a brief introduction to fundamental concepts and basic algorithms in the field of machine learning. Professor Tornatore will then survey existing work on various applications in optical networking domain, with a specific focus on failure detection and identification as well as quality of transmission estimation.

About the Presenter: Massimo Tornatore, Politecnico di Milano, Italy

Massimo Tornatore is currently an Associate Professor at Politecnico di Milano, Italy. In addition, he holds an appointment as Adjunct Professor at University of California, Davis, USA and as a visiting professor at University of Waterloo, Canada. Professor Tornatore research interests includes, performance evaluation and design of communication networks (with an emphasis on optical networking technologies), and machine learning application for network management. In these areas, he co-authored more than 300 peer-reviewed conference and journal papers (with 13 best paper awards). He is an active member of the Editorial Board of, among others, IEEE Communication Surveys and Tutorials, IEEE Communication Letters.
