The Innovation School will be facilitated by Eric Koester, serial entrepreneur and “entrepreneur-in-residence” at Georgetown University, USA. Eric will lead attendees through a series of lectures focused on the lean canvas business model, key tools for innovation exploration, customer discovery, experimentation with minimum viable products (MVP’s) and prototypes, and applying the methodologies of innovation as an entrepreneur or intrapreneur.

He has spent much of his career building companies, working with entrepreneurs and writing and teaching around topics of customer discovery, lean, entrepreneurship and innovation. Eric is currently the founder of Main Street Genome, a new technology startup developing tools for the small business economy. Previously, Eric was a co-founder of Zaarly, a marketplace to locate local small businesses and service providers, named by Fast Company as one of the Fifty Most Innovative Companies in the World. He was also an executive at Appature Inc., a cloud-based relationship marketing software company acquired by IMS in 2013; a founder of Learn that Name, acquired by Blackberry in 2010; and a founder/manager of other companies in the environmental consultancy and web development sectors. Eric was recently named one of Washington DC’s “40 under 40” and has written several books on startups and technology, including The Green Entrepreneur Handbook (CRC Press 2011) and Starting a High Tech Business Venture (Taylor & Francis 2010). Eric also devotes considerable time to building the startup community, including as a board member of UP Global and Startup Weekend and the DC co-chair of Enstitute. Eric began his entrepreneurial career as a corporate securities attorney at Cooley LLP, focusing on high-growth startups, venture funds, private equity and technology companies.

Anthony Crum enjoys improving products and processes to create innovative solutions for customers and more efficient workflows for organizations. As the Global Product Line Manager for Corning’s Fiber Optic Ribbon Cable business, Anthony is responsible for overseeing the lifecycle for one of the largest products in Corning Optical Communications’ portfolio. Currently he is focused on a complete overhaul of the product portfolio in one of the largest cable redesign projects of the past 25 years. Prior to moving into product line management, Anthony was the Global Director of Finance for Corning’s Optical Fiber and Cable division where he helped the business grow and double profitability from 2015 to 2018. He also worked directly with executive leadership to structure the $1B Verizon 5G fiber cable supply contract. Prior to that, Anthony was the VP of Finance at a private equity-owned manufacturing company which built equipment for the waste industry. He has written and presented leadership and financial management trainings for cross-functional audiences and is a recognized change agent. He is focused on data-driven and forward-thinking decisions that create value. He earned a B.S. summa cum laude from Southeastern University in Accounting, with a minor in Biblical Theology. He enjoys time with his wife and three kids, teaching Bible classes and riding his mountain bike.

Kimberly Reichel

Dr. Kimberly Reichel is a Lidar Scientist with 3DEO, a start-up out of MIT Lincoln Labs. As an optimist, she is passionate about developing new technologies to improve our world. Her research interests have previously encompassed terahertz (THz) science and applications, from active waveguide devices based on electronically reconfigurable liquid metals to quantum cascade laser (QCL) fabrication in random lasing geometries as well as extreme sub-wavelength THz imaging using scattering-type scanning nearfield optical microscopy (s-SNOM). Now with 3DEO, she is involved in the hardware integration of airborne lidar systems and data processing. She values equipping others and serves as an Ambassador of the Optical Society of America (OSA) where she provides support to OSA student chapters and professional development resources to the greater OSA community. She received her Ph.D. (2016) and M.S. (2013) in Applied Physics from Rice University and B.S. (2010) from the University of Miami.

Mengjie Yu is a postdoctoral fellow in the John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University. She received her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 2018 from Cornell University. Her research focuses on integrated photonics in silicon, silicon nitride, and lithium niobate platforms, and her interests include nonlinear frequency conversion, frequency combs, mid-infrared photonics, and optical coherent computing. Mengjie Yu is the 2020 OSA Ambassador. Her team is the third prize winner of OSA innovation school 2020. She was the winner of the 2016 Maiman Student Paper Competition and the 2016 Emil Wolf Student Paper Competition. She was the Caltech 2019 Young Investigator Lecturer. Currently, she serves as chair of the OSA Integrated Photonics Technical Group.

Dr. Sarah Lukes currently serves as a 2020 OSA ambassador. She received an electrical engineering PhD from Montana State University in 2015 as an NSF Graduate Research fellow. Her diverse background includes working in orthopedics/radiology, cardiovascular stents, and cryogenics at the Mayo Clinic, Boston Scientific, and S2 Corporation, respectively. During her doctorate, she gained expertise in optical MEMS while publishing 14 papers. Marcelo Saito Nogueira received his Master’s degree in Biomolecular Physics (maximum grade in each course taken) and Bachelor’s degree in Physical and Biomolecular sciences (technological emphasis) from the São Carlos Institute of Physics of University of São Paulo. He is recipient of the Bernhard Gross Award for best undergraduate academic performance. In 2017, he started his PhD in Physics at Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork. He has experience in Biophotonics, Biomedical optics and optical diagnostics. Selected areas include Photodiagnosis, Photodynamic therapy, Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, steady-state and time-resolved Fluorescence spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Multivariate data analysis/Chemometrics. Marcelo is a recipient of a number of awards (13 between 2013 and 2021) including but not limited to SPIE 2019 Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship; best student paper award at the conference at SPIE 2018 Photonics Europe and a 3rd Prize in the 2018 Siegman International School on Lasers, Optical Society of America Foundation. His current research focuses on the development of optical systems for clinical diagnostics and surgical guidance. The goal is improving the accuracy of disease detection and tissue identification by using multimodal optical spectroscopy, as well as investigating optical processes associated with biochemical and morphological changes in biological tissues. Marcelo studies optical spectroscopy from ultraviolet to near-infrared (until 2000 nm) wavelength and biophotonics in short timescales following tissue responses due to pulsed laser excitation. He is mainly interested in development of new photonics techniques to extract information of complex media, integration of existing optical tools for clinical translation, and data processing to enhance disease/impairment detection.
