High-performance ultra-compact metasurface optics

Optical metasurfaces, planar subwavelength nanoantenna arrays engineered for on-demand wavefront manipulation, have emerged rapidly as a powerful tool enabling compact flat optics with dramatically enhanced capabilities. When integrated with active elements, the pixelated, thin device architecture further facilitates dynamic tuning of local and global optical responses. In this talk, I will discuss opportunities and challenges of employing metasurfaces in a variety of optical systems that are traditionally bulky and complicated. Leveraging advanced materials, designs and architectures, I will further describe our efforts to develop ultra-compact all-dielectric metasurface optics with unprecedented performance, such as ultra-wide field-of-view metalenses, solid-state active meta-optics, new imaging and sensing architectures, etc. The recent progress shows that the judiciously engineered optical metasurfaces can significantly boost the performance, allow novel functionalities and effectively reduce the size, weight, power and cost (SWaP-C) of future optical systems.

Jessica DeGroote Nelson, headshotTian Gu is a Research Scientist at Materials Research Laboratory and Department of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT, where he is the co-Investigator of the Photonic Materials Research Group. His primary research interests involve nano-/micro-optics, integrated photonics, and photonic materials, focusing on the areas of metasurface flat optics, optical phase change materials, on-chip spectroscopy, data communications, photovoltaics, flexible photonics, and 2-D materials integrated photonics. He received his B.S. degree from Beijing Institute of Technology in Electrical Engineering, and Ph.D. degree from University of Delaware in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Gu is a recipient of the SPIE Rising Researcher Award, R&D 100 Award and TechConnect National Innovation Award.
