OEwaves’ Ultra-Low Noise Semiconductor Lasers and Thier Current and Emerging Applications

The HI-Q® Laser system is based on self-injection locking of semiconductor lasers to ultra-high quality factor crystalline whispering gallery mode resonators.  This approach reduces the noise of the semiconductor laser by approximately 60 dB, resulting in an output with low frequency and phase noise unmatched by any compact laser system.  These lasers are traditionally used in sensors and scientific and technological research and development.  Recent interest in emerging applications such as Quantum Technology and high throughput fiber optic coherent communication systems has underscored the need for compact lasers that exhibit low 1/f frequency noise.  This requirement cannot be fulfilled with lasers that exhibit low “linewidth” yet have large 1/f noise.  In this presentation the origin of 1/f noise will be discussed, and it will be shown how OEwaves’ HI-Q® Lasers achieve the lowest 1/f noise of any compact laser on the market.
