Figure 9® Mode-Locking Technology: Ultrafast Fiber Laser Applications in Science and Industry
In this session of the OIDA Technology Showcase, Menlo Systems will discuss the unique properties and benefits of its proprietary figure 9® mode-locking technology. The all-polarization maintaining fiber design allows for compact modules, the performance of which is superior to other existing mode-locking technologies in terms of reliability and lowest phase noise. It guarantees reproducible and long-term stable laser operation, implying reliability and ease-of use for various applications ranging from scientific high-precision measurements to industrial material characterization and processing. We will shed light on the crucial laser parameters in the latest applications such as 3D-microprinting, optical frequency combs, terahertz and mid-IR laser applications. We offer a live demonstration of our latest laser systems during the networking session subsequent to our scheduled presentation.

Simon earned his Diploma in Microsystems Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences in Regensburg, Germany, and his Master of Science in Photonics at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich, Germany. He joined Menlo Systems in April 2011 and since then gained a nearly decade of experience holding various positions, both at the headquarters in Germany and at our US office Menlo Systems Inc. In his first three-year stage, he was Engineer for THz-Timed Domain Spectrometers, followed by another three-year stage as International Sales Manager fs-Lasers. In 2017, at Menlo Inc., Simon started as US Western Regional Sales Manager and since January 2020 is US Director of Sales & Service.
ELMO 780 Femtosecond Erbium Laser
Menlo Systems’ unique figure 9® mode locking technology results in reproducible and long-term stable operation. The ELMO series with its all polarization maintaining fiber design guarantees excellent stability and low-noise operation. The ELMO 780 is perfectly suited for applications in terahertz generation, multiphoton excitation, lithography technology and 3D micro printing, as well as for seeding of amplifiers.
TeraSmart Compact Terahertz Spectrometer
The compact terahertz spectrometer TeraSmart integrates the latest achievements in broadband terahertz time-domain Spectroscopy (THz-TDS) into an easy-to-use turnkey solution. It combines Menlo Systems’ latest fiber-based femtosecond laser sources featuring our figure 9® mode locking technology with our industry-proven THz components. The modular design based on our OEM laser platform ELMO ensures flexible configuration of the system for integration in any industrial or scientific environment.
Mid-IR Comb Optical Frequency Comb
World-leading optical frequency comb technology is now available in the mid-infrared region. Taking advantage of Menlo Systems’ proprietary figure 9® mode-locking technology, Menlo Systems’ difference frequency generation (DFG) based Mid-IR combs provide access to the 3-14 µm range. The reliable, turn-key mid-IR Comb is an enabling tool for applications in the important fingerprint region for high accuracy spectroscopy or nanoFTIR.
