Space Photonics: An Enabling Technology for Satellite Communications and Sensing
Photonics technology is rapidly becoming indispensable for the space sector, enabling a plethora of sensing and communications applications. In this presentation we will cover recent technical progress and examples of G&H space optics and photonics technology for planetary exploration, Earth observation and satellite high-speed communications.
Liam Henwood-Moroney, Optical Systems Engineer, G&H
Liam Henwood-Moroney is an Optical Systems Engineer at G&H with 9 years experience in the photonics industry. Liam has a BSc(Hons) in electrical & electronic engineering and is currently pursuing a doctorate with the CDT in Applied Photonics at Heriot-Watt University. Starting out in electronics and moving into the realm of optics Liam is a multi-disciplined R&D engineer who enjoys working face-to-face with customers to generate new products and solutions with photonics.
DFB LASERS AND MODULES
G&H offers a broad range of DFB lasers in the C-band and L-band on 50 or 100 GHz channel spacing as well as at 1310 nm, 1064 nm, and custom wavelengths. Power level options include 40-100 mW out of the fiber for high power 14-pin lasers and 10-18 mW options for high bandwidth 7-pin configurations. We offer space qualified DFBs for use in a range of space applications.
780 nm FIBER-Q® FIBER COUPLED MODULATORS
Fiber-coupled acousto-optic modulators (FCAOM) offer an elegant and robust solution for amplitude modulation of fiber lasers, allowing direct control of the timing, intensity, and temporal shape of the laser output. Our Fiber-Q® modulators offer high extinction ratio, low insertion loss, and excellent stability in both polarization maintaining (PM) and non-PM formats. Built for reliability, the Fiber-Q® series of products features a rugged hermetic design in a compact, low-profile package, ideal for ease of integration into all-fiber and OEM systems, including medical laser systems. Our 780 nm Fiber-Q® is ideal for high power fiber laser and amplifier systems used in satellite comms systems.
Polarization Maintaining Fused Fiber Coupler
Our PM coupler enables the accurate monitoring and splitting of optical signals in polarization maintaining fiber. Manufactured using industry-standard PM fiber, the PM coupler is available in any coupling ratio from 1 – 50%. Based on G&H’s fused fiber technology, the PM coupler demonstrates very low loss, high power handling and there is no price penalty for adding a second input port. The center operating wavelength may be chosen from within a wide variety of operating passbands, including 780, 820, 980, 1064, 1310, 14xx, 15xx and 16xx nm.
