Specifying Coatings for Manufacturing

Optical coatings modify the reflectance, transmittance, and absorptive properties of optic substrates to make them much more efficient and functional. From a manufacturers perspective, there are several pertinent pieces of information that need to be communicated when specifying optical coatings. We will address various topics, such as glass type, wavelength or range of wavelengths of interest, transmission or reflection requirements, angle of incidence (AOI) or AOI range. We will also address supplemental requirements, such as witness piece requirements, special documentation desired, environmental durability requirements, and laser damage requirements.

Speaker

William Smith, Coating Engineer, LaCroix Precision Optics

Will has been with LaCroix Precision Optics for over 21 years. 20 of those years has been in the coating department. Will began as a operator and through education and ambition, he found his way into the Coating Engineer position. The multifaceted world of optical coatings has intrigued him from day one, including everything from chemistry, electronics, vacuum science, mechanical concepts, and coating design. Even after 20 years, Will still continues to learn and there is always a new challenge to face.
