Precision Optics and Components

Manufacturing and Selection of Bent Crystal X-Ray Optics

The high quality of many synthetic crystals, coupled with state-of–the-art optical manufacturing has made applications involving toroidally shaped crystals practical.  Curved x-ray crystal optics are used for focusing and analyzing x-ray emissions.  Current applications include:

  • Element chemical surface analysis
  • Hot plasma diagnostics
  • Ultra-fast probing in materials

These crystal optics work by diffracting x-rays based on the Bragg angle referenced to the plane of the crystal.   Crystals can be oriented and fabricated to resolve a wide range of monochromatic x-ray lines.  By curving the crystal planes in two directions, to form a toroidal surface, focusing of the x-ray source is possible.  This session discusses the choice of crystal material, the optical fabrication steps, and the various applications in use today.

George Murray serves as Vice-President of Sales & Marketing of Inrad Optics based in New Jersey. Mr. Murray joined the Company as Sales Manager, West Region in 2010. Prior to joining Inrad Optics, he held increasingly responsible roles in applications engineering, product marketing, and sales management which included international sales territories. His broad knowledge of diamond turning, thin film coating, optical fabrication, and laser applications offers a valuable resource to customers looking for engineered photonic solutions and products. George holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Business Administration.
