Overview

The bandwidth bottleneck is perhaps the single greatest challenge in the display field today and a solution to this challenge could have an enormous impact for the advancement of large, sophisticated 3D display systems. The bandwidth requirements of advanced 3D displays, which now approaches one Terapixel per second in some cases, has proven to be a significant challenge for scaling a wide variety of 3D displays, including light-field, holographic and volumetric displays.  FPGAs and ganged GPUs in their current form are a less than ideal solution to the problem. A custom, silicon-level solution may be desired and will be explored in this Incubator.

Incubator Goals

Through talks, moderated discussions, breakout sessions and informal networking the questions this incubator seeks to answer include:

  • How can we make a drive architecture that is both high bandwidth and display agnostic?
  • Can we create specifications for a silicon-level 3D display drive solution?

The primary goals of this Incubator will be to obtain consensus on the parameters of a custom, silicon-level, 3D drive solution and a software API which is display technology agnostic. These parameters might include:

  • Overall approach (distributed vs. centralized)
  • Display agnostic API
  • Architecture
  • Algorithms for generating light-fields
  • Channel number (e.g. number of integrated RAMDACS)
  • Channel output type (digital/analog)
  • Channel bandwidth and protocol for supporting software/firmware
