The U.S. agency NIST issued grants in 2014 to create roadmaps for topics ripe for consortia, including one on integrated photonics. That grant was awarded to a collaboration of MIT and iNEMI and a group they formed called the Photonics Systems Manufacturing Consortium (PSMC). The MIT Microphotonics Center has sponsored a roadmapping effort for several years called the Communications Technology Roadmap (CTR), under the supervision of Prof. Lionel Kimerling. The PSMC effort carried that forward. The project funded under the NIST grant has come to a close, with this final report in the form of a roadmap, with the final revisions released in December 2016. Meanwhile, after the grant was awarded, the U.S. government held a competition for the integrated photonics institute that was eventually awarded to AIM Photonics, of which MIT and iNEMI were signatories. MIT and iNEMI are transitioning and expanding the PSMC roadmapping effort to support the AIM Photonics institute in another effort called the Integrated Photonics Systems Roadmap (IPSR). The first edition of that roadmap is expected in early 2017.
