Principles for more effective technical leadership.
As we scientists and engineers advance in our careers, many of us move on to roles where we manage a project, a team, or even an entire business unit. To be effective, we find we must learn many new skills that were not part of our technical training. Effective leaders often find that some habits and patterns of thinking they developed during their technical training don’t work so well when leading a group to achieve challenging goals. We also find that understanding how to manage a team is not the same as ‘leading’ a team to accomplish great things.

This talk will outline the recent work by 5 leading companies (Ericsson, Nokia, Sumitomo, Lumentum, II-VI) in the initiative called mobile optical pluggables (MOPA). The MOPA initiative has produced a 55-page technical paper outlining all relevant optical solutions for 5G networks. These solutions, called optical blueprints, cover all parts of the 5G network: the low-layer split (aka fronthual), high-layer split, and backhaul, for all relevant distances (2-80 km), and technologies (grey optics, WDM optics, packet multiplexing, PON). Finally, an outlook into future needs and technologies will be made.

Over the same period silicon-based integration proved its value in the realm of electronics by transforming the way integrated circuits are built and fueling technology advances that have led to the Internet and the Cloud. Today photonic integration is transforming the way the optical networks that enable the Internet and Cloud are built. December 2014 marks the 10th anniversary of commercial shipments of long-haul optical networking solutions based on the world’s first large scale photonic integrated circuit.
This webinar briefly chronicles the evolution of photonic integration, the state of the art of photonic integration and future directions for this technology. We cover how these chips are designed and manufactured, why they are so incredibly reliable, and ultimately how they are integrated into a complete transport network architecture. We also look at the market opportunities for this technology in an Internet that is increasingly driven by Cloud-based architectures.

On November 5, the U.S. Department of Defense announced the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), for an Integrated Photonics Institute for Manufacturing Innovation (IP-IMI). The institute will be funded with approximately $110 million by the Department of Defense and must be matched 1:1 by the private sector. The manufacturing institute will be led by a non-profit and consist of large, medium, and small companies, as well as, universities and other educational institutions. In addition to bridging the gap between research and product development, the IP-IMIs will have a workforce and education component.

On June 2, 2014, the US Department of Defense (DoD) announced a Request for Information (RFI), the first step in the process of creating a new public-private Institute for Manufacturing Innovation (IMI) as part of the President’s National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI). In the RFI, the DoD lists six potential technological areas under consideration, which includes photonics. Only two will be selected which is why it is critical for our community to weigh in. Network operators today face significant operational challenges when it comes to provisioning services that span multiple networking layers. Network operations in traditional carrier environments are complex and involve both multiple vendor-specific management systems and operational support systems and processes that span multiple organizational boundaries. SDN with its concept of network programmability has the promise to speed provisioning in such environments. With the plethora of legacy systems and protocols in traditional carrier networks, however, a pragmatic SDN controller approach that is modular and encourages a multi-vendor controller environment is very appealing in comparison to monolithic controllers.
This webinar will present a proof of concept SDN framework that was developed using IETF’s Application Based Network Operations (ABNO) approach to support the orchestration and provisioning of services across a multi-vendor, multi-layer IP/MPLS and optical transport network.
It will cover concepts relating to multi-layer SDN, including automating network and service provisioning, orchestration of multi-layer operations, ensuring a modular SDN control layer architecture, and associated enabling technologies, such as OpenFlow, NETCONF, REST, PCE, BGP-LS, and GMPLS.
