Mueller Polarimetry of Structured and Random Media: from Metrology to Biomedicine

On Demand

7 April 2020, 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM

The basics of optical polarization and Mueller polarimetry as well as the review of physical phenomena of interaction of polarized light with different complex media (layered, periodical, scattering, anisotropic and absorbing) will be introduced first. Then it will be demonstrated that theoretical and experimental studies of interaction of polarized light with matter provide a lot of valuable information about the macroscopic and microscopic properties of object under study, including its diattenuation, birefringence, depolarization, scattering and absorption properties, surface topography, etc. This information can be used in numerous applications, from optical metrology to cancer detection and staging. The basic advantages of optical polarimetric techniques consist in being relatively low-cost, fast, non-contact and non-destructive, thus allowing in-situ and real-time measurements in many applications.

The Rise of Freeform Surfaces in the Design of Optical Systems

6 April 2020, 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM

Freeform optics has set a new path for optical system design across a wide range of applications spanning from microscopy to space optics, including the billion $ consumer market of near-eye displays for augmented reality that set us on this technology path in the first place. Today, freeform optics have been demonstrated to yield compact, achromatic, and high-performance imaging systems that are poised to enable the science of tomorrow. In this webinar, we will briefly introduce freeform optics and highlight emerging design methods. We will then present success stories and highlight active research in digital viewfinder, imager, and spectrometer designs that we anticipate will stimulate cooperation towards accelerating gain in enabling knowledge in freeform optics.

OIDA Workshop On Embedded Photonic Manufacturing for Data Centers

8 March 2020, 7:30 AM - 6:30 AM

Data centers increasingly rely on embedded photonics for enhanced connectivity between servers, memory, and computational systems. Furthermore, the integration of photonic functionality on to a single chip and co-packaged with electronics provides a route to further increase bandwidth and operational efficiencies, addressing many of the emerging challenges on data centre roadmaps. In addition new applications for photonics are emerging in AI and machine learning, which will likely require advanced packaging approaches supporting high bandwidth connectivity. However, even though embedded photonic technologies have been shown to achieve much lower link and switch budgets when compared to conventional electronic technologies, their wide-spread deployment is still impeded by significant technical, manufacturing and cost barriers.

Using non-linear optics to shine light on aerospace engineering challenges

On Demand

19 February 2020, 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM

Sir Horace Lamb famously said that “I am an old man now, and when I die and go to heaven, there are two matters on which I hope for enlightenment. One is quantum electrodynamics and the other is the turbulent motion of fluids. About the former, I am really rather optimistic.” Although nowadays we can travel in less than a day’s time from Perth, Australia to London, UK, and from Newark, USA to Singapore, there are still many open scientific questions in the aerospace engineering realm, especially when it comes to supersonic and hypersonic flight. Mastering hypersonic wind tunnels is one key component of the research involved but advanced, accurate and non-perturbative diagnostics is another key part. In this talk I will discuss laser diagnostic efforts developed to tackle the latter, by concentrating on the research efforts of our group in this field by utilizing Coherent Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering (CRBS).

How to control infrared light with phonon polaritons: a tutorial

On Demand

18 February 2020, 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Phonon polaritons (PhPs) emerge from the strong interaction between infrared (IR) photons within a spectral band and the atomic lattice vibrations (phonons) in ionic or ionic-like materials. In the vicinity of phonon polaritons extraordinary photonic responses are available; high-permittivity, near-zero permittivity (ENZ) as well as plasmonic-like properties are possible. This webinar tutorial will take the attendee from the basics of PhP photonic responses to current advanced PhP paradigms and metamaterials reporting on extreme IR light control. These platforms unleash new capabilities to harness IR light impacting a range of modern applications and gave rise to the emerging and growing field known as phonon polaritonics.

Enhancing Wireless Communications with Photonics

On Demand

17 February 2020, 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM

With the increase in demand for bandwidth, the current wireless communication networks are reaching a bottleneck. Microwave photonics (MWP), which combines the advantages of microwave electronics and photonics thus enabling larger bandwidths and increased flexibility has the potential to release this bottleneck. In this webinar, I will introduce the world of MWP and will highlight how it can be a driving force for next-generation communications. I will then outline our recent efforts to solve some of the current challenges using on-chip photonic devices

Vision- and Sensor-based Human Activity Recognition
