Optical solutions pose to be the predominant player in the great race to distributed electrification.

OIDA Sponsored Webinar: Optical Frequency Combs and Their Role in Modern Laser Cooling and Trapping Systems

On Demand

16 July 2020, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Quantum technologies are currently experiencing a surge in activity. This webinar will focus on laser cooling and trapping which has recently seen a shift from purely fundamental research toward a focus on increased application-driven effort such as quantum computing, quantum sensing, quantum communication, and quantum metrology. The scientific community faces a new set of challenges and it is essential for industry to continue to provide the tools necessary to enable and accelerate research and application development. Frequency combs are an essential component in optical clocks, but possess often overlooked properties which make them ideal in a broad range or cooling and trapping systems. In addition to being the ultimate laser reference, combs can provide a convenient backbone for entire laser systems, streamlining an optical lab. We will cover the relevant frequency comb properties, locking schemes, and integrated components which are moving lasers off the optical table and into convenient, clean packages without compromising performance. The technological frontier in computation, communication, and medicine is increasingly utilizing the power of quantum physics. Quantum processes are performed by interacting with microscopic systems such as atomic ions, neutral atoms, resonators, and photons to execute operations and store information. Atomic ions make an exceptional platform for many of the most important applications in quantum information. Trapped ion systems require excellent vacuum cells for keeping an ion trapped for long periods of time, and robust laser systems for writing and storing information. ColdQuanta has developed a compact ion trap package that is a fraction of the size of the state-of-the-art vacuum systems seen in laboratories around the world. We will review a compact ion trapping system that we have built in collaboration with TOPTICA and other partners, including Optosigma, Coherent, Duke University, and Sandia National Labs.

8 July 2020, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

OIDA completed a technology roadmap of quantum photonics earlier this year, to identify what is needed to commercialize quantum photonics technology. The target applications span quantum sensing to quantum communications and quantum computing. While it is early to identify detailed specifications for the wide array of potential applications, the roadmap characterizes the relevant landscape and lists optics and photonics needs that appear common across many of the emerging commercial opportunities. This webinar will present highlights from the roadmap, and provide some context to understand it, including an update on government funding of quantum research and other roadmap efforts worldwide. The webinar is intended for optics and photonics companies as well as academic researchers who are interested in moving quantum photonics from the lab to commercial use. There will be time for questions from live webinar attendees. OIDA Quantum Photonics Roadmap: Every Photon Counts was released to non-members on 1 June 2020, and is available at www.osa.org/OIDARoadmap

OIDA Sponsored Webinar: Taming a Mid-IR OPO – Realizing the Widest Tuning Range for High Resolution Spectroscopy

On Demand

23 June 2020, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

The 1.45 - 4um spectral region contains important spectroscopic signatures of many molecules. Semiconductors laser sources operate within this region, but they have very limited tuning ranges. Many such devices are required in order to have similar coverage. Optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) offer much wider tuning ranges than semiconductor lasers, and they have been commercially available for some time. However, wide wavelength coverage has been available only from pulsed OPOs, which necessarily have large linewidths that limit their utility for tunable laser molecular spectroscopy. CW OPOs have narrow linewidth that allows for high resolution spectroscopy. However, CW OPOs to date have suffered from mechanical stability and alignment issues, so that their tuning ranges are limited to approximately 700nm. Recently, TOPTICA Photonics engineered a CW OPO that solves these issues, and for the first time offers a CW OPO that can cover 1.45 – 4um without realignment. Motorized control of all tuning elements enables computer controlled, hands free tuning over this entire range. In this webinar, TOPTICA will discuss the design and capabilities of their OPO, and conduct a live spectroscopy demonstration.

OIDA Sponsored Webinar: Transform the Way You Bring Products to Market

On Demand

17 June 2020, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Companies are under the gun to shorten development cycles, eliminate material waste, reduce costs and above all, bring high-performing products to market faster and at a lower cost. However, inefficient workflows can paralyze even the most talented engineers on your team. The limiting factor is not the talent of the team but the shortcomings of process, tools and mind-set. To gain a competitive edge, companies are transforming the way their engineering teams use technology to improve collaboration and bring about better business outcomes. In this webinar, speaker Bob Householder, optics veteran and Key Account Manager at Zemax, will share how innovative companies today are using technology to transform manufacturability from optical design, to mechanical design and build, to manufacturer, in one seamless workflow.

OIDA Market Update

On Demand

16 June 2020, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the global economy, but the effects on the optical communications sector are complicated. OIDA Webinar Series: Opportunities to Enhance Liquidity

On Demand

28 May 2020, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Short-term challenges in accessing liquidity are a result of some businesses having their supply chains fundamentally disrupted, being unable to operate and, in many cases, having little to no visibility on their outlook. Lenders have correspondingly shifted from being willing to lend subject to higher pricing and somewhat tighter covenants, to being much more focused on what the corporate earnings picture is over the short-term, medium-term and long-term. This webinar will discuss some strategies on how to maximize debt capacity and operational flexibility under current financing arrangements and provide critical market intelligence as to the best practices possible in strategically dealing with COVID-19 effects and what liquidity-enhancing solutions are available in the market.
