With the increase in demand for bandwidth, the current wireless communication networks are reaching a bottleneck. Microwave photonics (MWP), which combines the advantages of microwave electronics and photonics thus enabling larger bandwidths and increased flexibility has the potential to release this bottleneck.
In this webinar, I will introduce the world of MWP and will highlight how it can be a driving force for next-generation communications. I will then outline our recent efforts to solve some of the current challenges using on-chip photonic devices

Globally, research activities on healthcare, elderly support, smart homes, activity of daily living (ADL) are progressing rapidly due to the advent of IoT sensor-based systems and devices. There is a huge progress recently on vision-based activity and gait analysis – because of the availability of GPUs and the intense involvement of deep learning-based methodologies. However, the challenges are complex and diversified, and hence, the progress in these domains are still constrained by a number of genuine challenges. In this webinar, these scopes and challenges will be summarized and some way outs will be outlined.

These capabilities include component design, fabrication, packaging and test. However, these capabilities are fragmented, both from a geographic, but more importantly, an integrated ecosystem perspective. There is an urgent need for the different parts of the integrated photonic ecosystem to collaborate and to build a more efficient manufacturing supply chain, similar to that for integrated electronics. Overcoming this challenge will be a critical step forward in accelerating the mass market uptake of integrated photonics.
This workshop will review and address the key challenges associated with manufacturing integrated photonic components. Invited speakers will discuss critical aspects of the ecosystem, providing insights on the current manufacturing challenges and what is being done to address them. Panel sessions will provide a unique opportunity for speakers and the audience to propose and review ways to strengthen collaborations across the ecosystem and to build a more effective manufacturing supply chain. The workshop is especially suited to those interested in providing integrated photonic manufacturing services and to the users of these services.

• Directors from university centers
Theme:
The Executive Forum-style event aims to match applications needing improvement with promising early-stage technologies to lead eventually to commercial solutions in a range of sectors, spanning consumer to industrial markets. While the ultimate activity is “matchmaking” with this end in mind, the workshop will focus on segments within the field that have particular promise today, such as Smart Cities, mobility and automation, Big Data and AI, and manufacturing issues related to these products. Some key questions for discussion will be:
• What is needed from the photonics industry? What are the problems that optics and photonics can have the greatest impact?
• What are the enabling technologies that have the most promise?
• What are the bottlenecks or “showstoppers” among photonics technologies today, and potential solutions?
