Photonics for Disaggregated Data Centers

22 March 2015, 12:33 PM - 12:34 PM

With increasingly challenging demands being placed on data centers, to perform many complex computational or network operations in addition to serving end users, there is growing pressure to find innovative low cost, efficient architectures. One approach is to move away from a host or servers based architecture and instead organize the various computing, memory, storage, and networking resources for maximum efficiency. This often means pooling common resources into central locations or realizing the data center as a supercomputer model. This approach can also be used to maximize application efficiency by taking advantage of the modularity of dis‐aggregation and choosing and / or updating resources that best meet the specific requirement.

Webinar: Light on a Chip: The Future of Photonic Integration

10 December 2014, 12:00 AM - 12:00 AM

Communicating with light (i.e., photons) on fiber has allowed the Internet to grow from transmission rates of a few kilobits per second into the terabit age. Over the same period silicon-based integration proved its value in the realm of electronics by transforming the way integrated circuits are built and fueling technology advances that have led to the Internet and the Cloud. Today photonic integration is transforming the way the optical networks that enable the Internet and Cloud are built. December 2014 marks the 10th anniversary of commercial shipments of long-haul optical networking solutions based on the world’s first large scale photonic integrated circuit. This webinar briefly chronicles the evolution of photonic integration, the state of the art of photonic integration and future directions for this technology. We cover how these chips are designed and manufactured, why they are so incredibly reliable, and ultimately how they are integrated into a complete transport network architecture. We also look at the market opportunities for this technology in an Internet that is increasingly driven by Cloud-based architectures.

Webinar: Integrated Photonics Institute for Manufacturing Innovation Q & A

25 November 2014, 12:00 AM - 12:00 AM

On November 5, the U.S. Department of Defense announced the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), for an Integrated Photonics Institute for Manufacturing Innovation (IP-IMI). The institute will be funded with approximately $110 million by the Department of Defense and must be matched 1:1 by the private sector. The manufacturing institute will be led by a non-profit and consist of large, medium, and small companies, as well as, universities and other educational institutions. In addition to bridging the gap between research and product development, the IP-IMIs will have a workforce and education component.

OIDA Workshop on State of the Art Integrated Photonics

5 November 2014, 3:02 PM - 3:02 PM

This workshop continues a series of OIDA workshops that reviews the state of the art in photonic integration in optical communications. It aims to address several questions: How does photonic integration address the emerging business needs of optical communications? What is the experience of deployment? What are the novel integration concepts and what are the key challenges in productization? Which forms of integration match specific applications within communications? What are some of the new and noteworthy products being commercialized today? The workshop will examine the commercialization of components and subsystems and their applications, as opposed to purely research achievements in photonic integration. The workshop will discuss applications across telecom and data center networks.

21st OIDA Annual Forum

4 November 2014, 12:00 AM - 12:00 AM

OIDA's Annual Forum brings key stakeholders together in Washington, D.C. to maximize discussion between industry, government, and academic decision-makers.

Webinar: The Freedom of Freeforms: Current Optics Manufacturing Methods Allow for Freeform Optical Designs

16 October 2014, 3:55 PM - 3:55 PM

Freeform optical shapes or optical surfaces that are designed with non-symmetric features are gaining popularity with lens designers and optical system integrators. A common question about freeform optics is, “If I design it, can you really make it?” This webinar outlines current optical fabrication capabilities and associated optical tolerance guidelines for freeforms.

Webinar: Polarization Related Emulation and Testing in Coherent Optical Communication Systems

27 August 2014, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

As optical communication systems become increasingly complex with high level modulations and broader bandwidth, understanding of the properties of the system impairments and their effective compensation is essential to maintaining reliable system performance. Polarization related impairments such as Polarization variation, polarization dependent loss, and polarization mode dispersion particularly challenging due to their dynamic nature. The focus of this webinar is to introduce methods of monitoring and emulation of polarization related impairments as essential tools for analysis and mitigation of these dynamic system impairments.

Webinar: National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI) Background Information & Information on DOD RFI

17 June 2014, 1:15 PM - 1:16 PM

On June 2, 2014, the US Department of Defense (DoD) announced a Request for Information (RFI), the first step in the process of creating a new public-private Institute for Manufacturing Innovation (IMI) as part of the President’s National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI). In the RFI, the DoD lists six potential technological areas under consideration, which includes photonics. Only two will be selected which is why it is critical for our community to weigh in. The RFI can be found here.

Webinar: Carrier SDN for Multi-layer Control: Savings and Services

7 May 2014, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Network operators today face significant operational challenges when it comes to provisioning services that span multiple networking layers. Network operations in traditional carrier environments are complex and involve both multiple vendor-specific management systems and operational support systems and processes that span multiple organizational boundaries. SDN with its concept of network programmability has the promise to speed provisioning in such environments. With the plethora of legacy systems and protocols in traditional carrier networks, however, a pragmatic SDN controller approach that is modular and encourages a multi-vendor controller environment is very appealing in comparison to monolithic controllers. This webinar will present a proof of concept SDN framework that was developed using IETF’s Application Based Network Operations (ABNO) approach to support the orchestration and provisioning of services across a multi-vendor, multi-layer IP/MPLS and optical transport network. It will cover concepts relating to multi-layer SDN, including automating network and service provisioning, orchestration of multi-layer operations, ensuring a modular SDN control layer architecture, and associated enabling technologies, such as OpenFlow, NETCONF, REST, PCE, BGP-LS, and GMPLS.
