Next generation coherent optical systems are expected to deliver high data rates to meet the increase of traffic demands driven by the emergence of high bandwidth applications, such as Internet of Things, 4K video streaming, and online gaming. Different technologies have been proposed and investigated for next generation 400G, 800G, and 1.6T systems. In this webinar, we review the most promising techniques including, advanced modulation formats and coding, fiber nonlinearity mitigation, and space division multiplexing. All demonstrations will be performed in VPIphotonics Design Suite.

Future wireless networks have to deal with a high degree of heterogeneity in terms of device classes, deployment environments, and mobility levels. Coexisting wireless technologies is an encouraging approach to revolutionize future networks. The radio-frequency (RF) based WiFi access points have been already considered to enable indoor traffic off-loading from LTE-cells. In addition to RF, optical wireless technologies such as visible light communications (VLC) open up a new opportunity. VLC is an emerging technology that uses, for example, the existing indoor lighting infrastructure to offer data transmission combined with high-quality illumination. The technology has the potential to add capacity and to be an attractive complementary to off-load data from existing RF networks. In this webinar, we focus on describing the potential of VLC, highlighting different research challenges, and articulating classical as well as machine learning-based approaches to deal with these challenges.

Streamlining the design process, shortening the development cycle, and reducing the transition to manufacturing remain some of the most demanding requirements for photonic integrated circuit (PIC) designers. During this webinar, Infinera and VPIphotonics will present a design and fabrication workflow for InP PICs developed to address these needs. The workflow is based on the Infinera Process Design Kit (PDK), which includes devices optimized to ensure the best performance and yield within Infinera’s InP foundry. Quantum technologies are currently experiencing a surge in activity. This webinar will focus on laser cooling and trapping which has recently seen a shift from purely fundamental research toward a focus on increased application-driven effort such as quantum computing, quantum sensing, quantum communication, and quantum metrology. The scientific community faces a new set of challenges and it is essential for industry to continue to provide the tools necessary to enable and accelerate research and application development.
Frequency combs are an essential component in optical clocks, but possess often overlooked properties which make them ideal in a broad range or cooling and trapping systems. In addition to being the ultimate laser reference, combs can provide a convenient backbone for entire laser systems, streamlining an optical lab. We will cover the relevant frequency comb properties, locking schemes, and integrated components which are moving lasers off the optical table and into convenient, clean packages without compromising performance.
The technological frontier in computation, communication, and medicine is increasingly utilizing the power of quantum physics. Quantum processes are performed by interacting with microscopic systems such as atomic ions, neutral atoms, resonators, and photons to execute operations and store information. Atomic ions make an exceptional platform for many of the most important applications in quantum information. Trapped ion systems require excellent vacuum cells for keeping an ion trapped for long periods of time, and robust laser systems for writing and storing information. ColdQuanta has developed a compact ion trap package that is a fraction of the size of the state-of-the-art vacuum systems seen in laboratories around the world. We will review a compact ion trapping system that we have built in collaboration with TOPTICA and other partners, including Optosigma, Coherent, Duke University, and Sandia National Labs.

OIDA completed a technology roadmap of quantum photonics earlier this year, to identify what is needed to commercialize quantum photonics technology. The target applications span quantum sensing to quantum communications and quantum computing. While it is early to identify detailed specifications for the wide array of potential applications, the roadmap characterizes the relevant landscape and lists optics and photonics needs that appear common across many of the emerging commercial opportunities.
This webinar will present highlights from the roadmap, and provide some context to understand it, including an update on government funding of quantum research and other roadmap efforts worldwide. The webinar is intended for optics and photonics companies as well as academic researchers who are interested in moving quantum photonics from the lab to commercial use. There will be time for questions from live webinar attendees. Historically, optical design has taken the route of designing for best nominal performance first, followed by modifying the system to account for any imperfections in manufacturing to obtain the best possible yield. With OpticStudio’s recent release of High Yield Optimization, the two-step process is handled simultaneously during optimization. During this presentation, we’ll see how this functionality is used in a real application and compare the usage of High Yield Optimization to the traditional design process.
