Ernst Abbe

Ernst Abbe developed the first optical lenses based on optical theory and the laws of physics. Using precise mathematical formulas, he greatly increased lens precision.

He worked with Carl Zeiss to advance lens design and create high quality optical instruments. (Photo: Burndy Portraits of Scientists Collection, The Huntington Library, San Marino, CA)
