Inventor Edwin Land first demonstrated the polaroid instant camera at an OSA meeting in 1947.

Edwin Land

Inventor Edwin Land developed inexpensive filters to polarize light.

He founded Polaroid Corporation to commercialize the filters. Initial success came through applications for sunglasses and cameras. Other applications included 3-D glasses for movies and night-vision goggles for the military. Land also created an instant camera which developed an image in less than a minute and shared his findings at an OSA meeting. (Photo: OSA Archives)
