Charge Coupled Device (CCD)

The charge coupled device (CCD), invented by Willard Boyle and George Smith in 1969, became one of the most prolific imaging sensors.

Transforming light into useful digital information, CCDs are found in a wide range of products from digital cameras and bar code readers to medical endoscopes and telescopes. (Photo: Reprinted with permission of Alcatel-Lucent USA, Inc.)
