Automated facial recognition and fingerprint identification are just two forms of biometrics.

Biometrics is both a biological characteristic used to identify an individual and a process that uses automation to recognize an individual.

Sensors, software and optics combine to create systems that recognize biological features unique to an individual. Biometric systems identify individuals based on multiple features including palm prints, fingerprints, the iris of the eye and the face. (Photo: Boston)
