M. David Egger earned his bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and his master’s and Ph.D. from Yale University. He worked for a number of years at Yale before joining Rutgers University in 1974.

In 2000, he received OSA’s R. W. Wood Prize “for seminal contributions to confocal microscopy.”
