Ajoy K Ghatak

Ajoy Ghatak got his M.Sc. degree in Physics from Delhi University in 1959 and Ph.D. degree in Engineering Physics from Cornell University in 1963. During 1963-64, he was a Research Associate at Brookhaven National Laboratory. In 1966 he joined the Physics Department of Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi where he became a Professor in 1974. He is the recipient of many awards including CSIR Bhatnagar Award for outstanding contributions in physical sciences, SPIE Educator Award for unparalleled global contributions to fiber optics research, and his tireless dedication to optics education worldwide, OSA Esther Hoffman Beller Award for outstanding contributions to optics education, OSI Amita De award for life long research contributions in the field of optics and dedicated service to the optics community, and the ICO Galileo award. Ghatak was elected an OSA Fellow in 1995, and he received the 2003 Esther Hoffman Beller Medal. He most recently received OSA’s 2020 Sang Soo Lee Award.

Professor Ghatak has published over 160 research papers in internationally reputed journals. Ghatak is an author/co-author of 14 books which range from text books to research monographs.
