Optical Communications (PC)

Optical Communications

This group oversees the development in the field of optical communications. It deals with optical transmission aspects from chip-to-chip, ultra-short haul to long haul range. It deals with optical networking aspects, coding and decoding of information onto photons, optical signal processing and other transmission related aspects.

Webinar on 50 Gbit/s Passive Optical Network (50G-PON): Standards Progress and Applications in 5G

When: 23 March 2021, 15:00 EDT (UTC -4:00)

This webinar will introduce the ITU standardization effort on 50 Gbit/s Passive Optical Network (50G-PON). The ITU project G.hsp will be reviewed and the standards development status will be updated. The webinar will focus on the 50G-PON system requirements and accepted solutions. Applications in 5G will be analyzed to highlight 50G-PON features. Recent industry test results will be reported, and challenges will be summarized to encourage joint research in this area.

Campfire Session: Scaling capacity of fiber-optic transmission systems via silicon photonics

When: 30 March 2021, 10:00 EDT (UTC -4:00)

This campfire session will start with a talk from Wei Shi. Prof. Shi’s talk will focus on the tremendous growth of data traffic that has spurred a rapid evolution of optical communications for a higher data transmission capacity. Next-generation fiber-optic communication systems will require dramatically increased complexity that cannot be obtained using discrete components. In this context, silicon photonics is quickly maturing. The talk will provide a system perspective and reviews recent progress and challenges in silicon photonics probing various dimensions of light to scale the capacity of fiber-optic networks towards terabits-per-second per optical interface and petabits-per-second per transmission link. Following the talk from Prof. Shi, the remainder of the session will be open for discussion so come with your thoughts and questions ready. You will be able to turn your camera and mic on or off to participate as you choose.
