Ophthalmologist Dr. Patricia Era Bath invented one of the most important surgical tools in the history of ophthalmology.
Her breakthrough work led to her being widely regarded as the “Mother of Laser Cataract Surgery” because her invention kick-started the Laser Cataract Surgery Era in Ophthalmology. In 1988, Dr. Bath became the first Black woman to receive a medical patent for the Laserphaco Probe [U.S. Patent No. 4,744,360].
