Honoring Elsa Garmire

Submitted by Gary Evans, Southern Methodist University

Elsa Garmire was a postdoc at Caltech and I was one of many graduate students that she helped guide through the process in the early 1970s. Later, when Elsa was at USC and a consultant to Aerospace Corporation, we had a joint paper rejected. I would have given up on the paper, but Elsa persisted. A decade or so later, Professor Iga, while giving an invited talk included that paper in a short list of milestone papers leading to the development of single frequency semiconductor lasers.
