Honoring Katharine Blodgett Gebbie
National Institute of Standards and Technology

Submitted by Charles W. Clark Joint Quantum Institute, NIST and the University of Maryland

Katharine Blodgett Gebbie

Katharine Gebbie was an astronomer who became a legendary research manager at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as the founding director of its Physics Laboratory. Under her leadership four of its scientists received the Nobel Prize in Physics - all for work closely associated with optics. Her great gift was the ability to spot, nurture and sustain young talent. I know many OSA members who share my gratitude to her for tireless guidance and support.
