Honoring Dr. Jürgen Kuhl
Max-Planck-Institut

Dr. Jürgen Kuhl

Herr Dr. Kuhl gave a memorable introduction (Einführung) to scientific thoroughness (Gründlichkeit) and rigor (Strenge) to a generation of grad students from Germany, postdocs from all over the world, and to visiting Humboldt Fellows like myself. The productivity of his group in solid state physics research (Festkörperforschung) was remarkable. When we were working on THz spectroscopy, I remember well achieving a signal to noise ration of 100:1 and Dr. Kuhl asking "Why can't we get 1000:1?)
