Alan D. White

My father inspired me to study physics, lasers, and optics. I remember him polishing a telescope mirror in the basement, casting forks to build an 8” reflector, testing the resolution by imaging a road map fastened to the fence in the back yard, and then viewing a full moon. A few years later, he brought home a red HeNe laser. 15 years later, he showed me how to collimate a beam using a shearing plate. Even today, 50 years later, I still benefit from his intuition and experience in science.
