I would like to express my gratitude to Philip Russell for his inspirational role in developing my own research path. Philip’s pioneering work in photonic crystal fibers has been for me but for so many of us researchers a cheerful playground and a rewarding goldmine. Philip’s unfailing pursuit for uncharted physics themes remains a subject of my deep admiration and an example to fellow for any young scientist.
