The OSA Foundation is pleased to announce the Corning Women in Optical Communications Scholarships and Travel Grants.

Women in Optical Communications: Scholarship

Deadline: 20 December 2018 

Driving innovation in the global communication network requires bringing a diverse group of people together to tackle challenges such as enabling 5G and the Internet-of-Things. To support gender diversity in the optical communications industry, The OSA Foundation (OSAF) and Corning, Inc. are pleased to announce the Women in Optical Communications Scholarship. This scholarship is a merit-based prize recognizing outstanding women graduate students studying optical communications and networking. Three $3,000 USD scholarships will be distributed annually to supplement tuition, mandatory fees, and other expenses.  Additionally, winners will receive up to $2,000 USD in travel expenses, housing and registration fees to attend the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC). Recipients will be recognized at OFC.

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • A woman currently enrolled as a graduate student at a university.
  • Field of study/research should be focused on one of the following areas: Optical Components, Devices and Fiber, Networks, Applications and Access or Photonic Systems and Subsystems.
  • Demonstrated academic excellence (GPA, publications, references, other awards/merits).

Applications must include:

  • A CV or resume.
  • Personal statement describing academic/professional background and interest in the scholarship in 500 words or less.
    • What are your educational and career goals?
    • Describe your experiences and/or interests related to optical networking, data center science, computing, engineering, or related areas?
    • OSAF and Corning encourage the participation and leadership of women in optical communications and networking. How could you help us achieve this mission?
  • Academic transcripts covering the last 3 years.
  • Two letters of recommendation addressing your merits for receiving this scholarship.

Women in Optical Communications:          Travel Grants 

Deadline: 20 December 2018 

The OSA Foundation is pleased to announce the Corning Travel Grants for Women. These need-based grants are available for women who are currently graduate students, working as post-docs, or in the first 1-5 years of their career. These grants are intended to help cover travel costs to the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC).  

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • A woman currently enrolled as a graduate student, working as a post-doc, or in the first 1-5 years of your career.
  • Demonstrated need for travel assistance to OFC.
    • This is not to take the place of standard forms of support, but rather is meant to provide full or supplementary support for someone who otherwise would be expected to cover expenses out of her own pocket.

Applications must include:

  • A CV or resume.
  • A statement describing the need and explanation of why funds are not available from traditional sources (e.g. travel policy restrictions, advisor budget limitations, lack of corporate travel support).
  • Travel budget to include anticipated expenses and noting any other forms of funding being provided.
