Established in 2008 to honor Emil Wolf for his many contributions to science and the Optical Society, this competition recognizes the innovation, research, and presentation excellence of students presenting their work during Frontiers in Optics (FiO). 

One winner from each submission category will receive a US$300 award stipend, a complimentary three-year student membership, and an award certificate. Results are announced after the conference.This program is sponsored by Optics Communications published by Elsevier. Additional support has also been provided by Physical Optics Corporation, the University of Rochester Physics Department, the Institute of Optics, and individual contributors including: G. Michael Morris, Grace and Robert Klonoski, Daniel James, Peter Knight, M. Suhail Zubairy, Kisik Kim, and Elizabeth A. Rogan.

Application Dates:

The submitting author must opt-in to the competition during the regular paper submission process and follow all of the instructions provided on the submission site.
Paper Submission Deadline: 07 July 2021

Applicants Must:

  • Be an undergraduate or graduate student of an educational institution of collegiate grade who is devoting more than half-time to studies within the institution at the time the paper was written.
  • Submit a paper that is accepted during the regular “call for papers” process for FIO (Note: Post-deadline Papers are not part of this competition).
  • Present the paper orally during the conference.
