OSA's First Fellows

The OSA Board of Directors approved the first class of OSA Fellows on 1 April 1959.  These 115 members included five women and represented seven countries.

Collectively, this group of Fellows would win 55 OSA Awards, including 24 Frederic Ives Medal/Jarus W. Quinn Prize recipients. Ten became OSA Honorary Members, and 24 would serve as OSA President. Three would win Nobel Prizes: Gerhard Herzberg (Chemistry 1971), Haldan Keffer Hartline (Physiology/Medicine 1967) and George Wald (Physiology/Medicine 1967).
