Joseph W. Goodman Book Writing Award

Recognizing a recent, outstanding book in the field of optics and photonics that has contributed significantly to research, teaching, or the optics and photonics industry. This award is co-sponsored by Optica and SPIE.

Nominator Requirements

There is no membership requirement for nominators. Self-nomination is permitted for this award.

Book Eligibility Requirements

1. Must have been published (first edition or first revised edition) no more than six (6) years prior to 1 January of the year of the award; 1 January of the book copyright year will be assumed as the date of first publication.

2. Only authored books are eligible, including books with more than one principal author.

3. Edited compilations, handbooks, reviews, etc., with multiple contributing authors will not be considered.

4. Textbooks, research monographs, scientific or technical reviews, or any other book type or genre that covers its subject in depth are eligible.

5. Books from any publisher worldwide are eligible.

6. The book must be currently in print and readily available from the publisher and suppliers.

7. Only books in the English language will be considered.

8. Book subjects may cover a broad area of optics, or may be intended to serve a narrow sub-specialty, provided that that sub-specialty has substantial impact on the field of optics and photonics.

9. Books that originate or organize knowledge in a new branch of optics, offer a highly definitive review of an established branch of optics, or are unusually well suited for textbooks at the college or graduate level are all excellent candidates.

10. This award is not intended for books that are primarily dedicated to popularizing science.

11. Awards are not presented posthumously, except in the case that the recipient's death occurs after the Selection Committee decision has been made.

Selection Criteria

The influence of a book is judged by the impact it has had on research, teaching, industry or business. In selecting a winning book, the Selection Committee may consider such measures of impact as number of citations, the degree of adoption for coursework and number of copies sold, as well as other factors at its discretion.

Nomination Requirements

1. Book details, including full title, full name(s) of author(s), publisher and date of publication.

2. An original, one (1) page narrative/support statement describing how the nominated book has contributed significantly to research, teaching, business or industry.

3. A short biography of the author(s).

Note: References are not required for this award. Copies of nominated books will be requested from the publisher for review.

Note : The nomination and selection process rotates between Optica and SPIE.

Selection Process

The Selection Committee reviews and discusses all eligible nominees. After careful consideration, they make a recommendation that is approved by the Awards Council and Board of Directors.

Please note that a minimum of four eligible nominations are required before the Selection Committee may select a recipient. If the minimum is not met, all nominations will be held for consideration the following cycle.

All nominations are automatically considered for up to three review cycles. After consideration by three Selection Committees, the nomination is retired but may be renominated.

1. Log in to BEAM, our Awards and Honors system, with your Optica credentials.

2. Be sure you are on the "Nominators" tab.

3. Click the "Submit a New Nomination" button and select the appropriate award/medal from the drop-down menu.

4. Enter the name and email address of the nominee. You will have the option to add multiple nominees later in the process if needed.

5. Input the required supporting information.

6. Select "Additional Nominees" from the menu if needed.

7. Review and submit the nomination prior to the deadline.

8. After submitting the nomination you will receive a confirmation email.
