In Memoriam: Joseph W. Haus, 1948-2019,
Jan 11, 2019
Joseph Haus, OSA Fellow and active member volunteer, has passed away at the age of 70. Haus was known for his work in quantum and nonlinear optics phenomena in heterogeneous systems, especially propagation in photonic crystals and optical metamaterials. He was elected an OSA Fellow in 1998 for furthering the understanding of quantum noise and propagation in superfluorescence and stimulated Raman scattering, and linear and nonlinear response in composite materials.
Haus attended John Carrol University in University Heights, Ohio, USA, for his bachelor’s and master’s degrees (1971, 1972) and pursued a PhD at the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC, USA (1975). He spent 1991-1992 at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology at The University of Tokyo as the Hitachi Ltd Quantum Materials Chair. He was a Professor in the Electro-Optics and Photonics department in the SChool of Engineering at the University of Dayton, Dayton, Ohio, USA.
Haus was an active OSA volunteer having been a founding member and past co-chairperson of the OSA Nanophotonics Conference. He was a Fellow of OSA, SPIE and APS and member of IEEE-LEOS. He served as the Editor for Chinese Optics letters and Journal of the European Optical Society. Haus authored more than 400 papers and contributed to several books including, Fundamentals and Applications of Nanophotonics (2016).
Haus was admired by students and colleagues and known for being a quintessential gentleman with a soft-spoken, patient, and kind manner. He was always willing to share his keen insights and enthusiasm for physics and optics, and his curiosity inspired others.
Joe Haus will be dearly missed by his family and colleagues. OSA and the scientific community mourns the loss of Joe Haus.
