OSA Mourns the Loss of Silverio Pedro Almeida

OSA Emeritus Member, Silverio Pedro Almeida, 73, died on January 20, 2007.

After receiving his B.A. in Physics from Clark University, Almeida attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he earned a M.S. in Physics, then Cambridge University, Cambridge, England, where he received a Ph.D in Physics.  He conducted his post graduate work at the University of California – Berkeley and his post doctorate work at the CERN Laboratories in Switzerland.

Almeida was internationally recognized for his research and teachings in particle physics and optics, serving on subcommittees for NATO and receiving numerous awards and recognition from his peers. He was an accomplished educator and leader and was a professor of physics for 21 years at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA.  

In 1989, he was appointed Chairman of the Physics Department at the University of North Carolina Charlotte and served there until 1998. One of his significant achievements while at UNC Charlotte was development of the optics research program.  Almeida also served as Interim Chair of the Physics Department at the College of Charleston.

He is survived by his wife, Christine, two children, two sisters, and two granddaughters.
